The Public Protector's office has initiated a formal investigation into Gayton McKenzie, the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, following accusations of financial mismanagement and ethical breaches. This probe was triggered by a complaint from the EFF (Economic Freedom Fighters) regarding McKenzie's conduct during his trip to the 2024 Paris Olympics, an event that saw his department spend a staggering R804,597.71.
According to details disclosed in a parliamentary reply, McKenzie’s Paris visit racked up over R450,000 in ground transport costs, R113,000 for a seven-night stay in a hotel, and R215,000 on business-class airfare through Air France. Responding to scrutiny over the expenses, McKenzie clarified that his trip was for official government meetings, insisting that he only attended the opening of the games before returning to dive deeper into his new ministerial responsibilities.
However, the EFF has publicly decried what it considers a gross misuse of taxpayer money, prompting them to seek the intervention of the Public Protector. The office confirmed the receipt of this complaint on October 17, 2024, acknowledging the serious nature of the allegations that suggest McKenzie may have violated the Executive Ethics Code and potentially misused public funds destined for governmental duties.
The investigation will focus on whether McKenzie acted counter to the responsibilities of his office by inappropriately spending public funds for his trip. Specifically, it will assess if his actions align with the expectations of the Code of Ethical Conduct and the mandates of the Ministerial Handbook.
In a letter addressing the EFF's concerns, the Public Protector outlined the investigation's scope, noting that it is currently in the stage of gathering and analyzing pertinent information and evidence. The office also informed President Cyril Ramaphosa about its ongoing examination, reinforcing its commitment to conduct a thorough and expedited investigation.
This case underscores the critical oversight role played by governmental watchdogs in ensuring accountability and transparency within the ranks of public service. As the investigation proceeds, it’s expected to shed more light on the veracity of the allegations and the integrity of public spending in South Africa.
