The tranquil scene at Milnerton Beach was abruptly transformed into a hub of emergency activities as distressing reports emerged on Sunday, of two local swimmers swept away by rip currents. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) alongside Milnerton Surf Lifeguards and multiple other agencies responded vigorously to the crisis unfolding at one of Cape Town’s popular coastal spots.
The incident, which occurred exactly at 18h32 on Sunday, prompted an immediate and expansive search and rescue operation involving air, sea, and shoreline resources. Witnesses near the beachfront raised the alert, compelling NSRI units from Table Bay, Melkbosstrand, and Bakoven to intervene, guided by CoCT (City of Cape Town) water rescue network.
The operation saw NSRI deploy several rescue crafts including the ‘Rotaries Gift’ and ‘Sea Ranger 13,’ while the EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter hovered over the area, assisted by a Metro Rescue diver. Notwithstanding these extensive efforts and the deployment of police and divers from the Water Policing and Diving Services (WPDS), the search yielded relief for one, but despair for another.
A local Good Samaritan deserves accolades for his quick thinking; utilizing an NSRI Pink Rescue Buoy, he managed to secure the safety of a 23-year-old man, demonstrating the crucial role these lifesaving devices play along the coastline. Unfortunately, the rescued young man reported that his 44-year-old companion from Belhar was still missing.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, fading light posed additional challenges for the rescue teams. Nonetheless, the operation stretched into the night with free dive searches and continued monitoring. By Sunday night, the situation took a somber turn when it became clear that there was no sign of the 44-year-old man despite the exhaustive efforts extended by all teams involved.
Milnerton’s surf lifeguards, along with WPDS Police divers, have relentlessly continued the search into the following days, maintaining hope and determination under heartbreaking circumstances.
As the community of Milnerton and surrounding areas hold their breath, the spirit of unity and resilience shines through. The incident not only highlights the unpredictable nature of the sea but also casts a spotlight on the courage and dedication of the rescue teams and the invaluable role of lifesaving apparatus like the NSRI Pink Rescue Buoys.
Our deepest sympathies are extended to the friends and family of the missing man during this profoundly difficult time, and our gratitude is with the rescuers who continue to risk their lives for the safety of others.
