In a bold move to seize a larger share of the online retail market, Checkers has announced a significant expansion of its Sixty60 app's product offerings, positioning it as a direct competitor to giants like Takealot and Amazon. Launched on Thursday, the new Sixty60 app not only promises a sleeker design and improved user interface but also introduces enhanced security measures with multi-factor authentication, ensuring a safe and user-friendly shopping experience.

With over 10,000 general merchandise items now available for same-day delivery within one-hour slots, the Checkers Sixty60 service is making online shopping more convenient than ever. These products include high-demand electronics and appliances from prestigious brands such as Apple, Dyson, Thule, Smeg, Samsung, and Harmon Kardon.

Neil Schreuder, Shoprite’s chief strategy and innovation officer, articulated the company's vision to dominate the continental retail market. "Our aim is to become Africa’s most profitable omnichannel retailer," said Schreuder. This ambition is evident in the addition of 2,500 premium products and 100 new brands to their inventory, with further expansions planned in the coming months.

The rollout of these premium products will occur in phases across the country, starting with selected areas in Cape Town such as Kuils River, Brackenfell, and Milnerton, among others. This strategic expansion not only enhances the variety of products available but also caters to the upscale market segments in these regions.

Moreover, to entice customers to try out the revamped service, Sixty60 is offering free delivery on Checkers Hyper products until the end of 2024. This aggressive marketing strategy highlights Shoprite’s intent to use Sixty60 not just for groceries but as a comprehensive online shopping solution.

The evolution of Sixty60 from a basic grocery delivery service to a fully-fledged e-commerce platform demonstrates Shoprite's proactive approach in adapting to consumer needs and market dynamics. Their robust logistics network sets a high benchmark for delivery efficiency, prompting other online retailers to innovate continually to keep pace.

This strategic expansion by Shoprite comes as Takealot also escalates its services, with the extension of its TakealotNOW 1-hour delivery service to more areas including Pretoria, showing the intensifying competition in South Africa’s online retail space.

As e-commerce grows in South Africa, the race to dominate the market is clearly on, with Checkers Sixty60 setting the stage for an exciting retail battle. Customers can now enjoy not only faster but also more diverse shopping options at their fingertips, promising a shake-up in the South African e-commerce landscape.
