In a recent development, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has announced the completion of a comprehensive verification process aimed to counter allegations of "ghost workers" within its organization. Conducted in late September 2024, the process involved rigorous interviews with freelance contractors, especially in the News and Current Affairs division.

The term "ghost workers" refers to individuals listed on a company's payroll who, in reality, do not contribute to the organization's operations. Such discrepancies can occur due to various reasons such as administrative errors, improper hiring procedures, or lack of effective termination processes.

This verification initiative mandated by the SABC required all Gauteng-based contractors to participate in face-to-face interviews from September 19 to 26, 2024, while contractors in other regions were accommodated virtually. The required documents for this audit included a valid South African ID and a recent bank account confirmation letter.

Mmoni Seapolelo, SABC's Manager for Media Relations, emphasized that this was a standard procedure driven by the findings from earlier risk assessments. The process aims not only to rectify inaccuracies in contractor records but also to adhere to stringent regulatory standards and enhance operational efficiencies.

The ghost workers saga came into the spotlight in December 2023 when an anonymous email alleging payments to non-existent employees within the SABC News division surfaced on social media. Following this, Moshoeshoe Monare, Group Executive for News and Current Affairs, spearheaded a thorough investigation into these claims. Subsequent disclosures revealed the resignation of a manager and disciplinary actions against others implicated.

Further investigations led by Monare uncovered at least three cases of ghost worker payments. However, specific details were withheld pending the ongoing inquiry. Monare assured that any contractual irregularities discovered would be promptly addressed, including terminating fraudulent contracts and recovering lost funds.

The audit did not just provide clarity but also underscored the SABC's commitment to transparency and sound management practices. As the investigation concludes, SABC ensures that such discrepancies are rectified and preventive measures are implemented to safeguard against similar issues in the future.
