Telkom Cracks Down on Data Theft with High Court-Ordered Raid

In a decisive move to fend off data privacy violations, Telkom, one of South Africa's largest telecommunications providers, has carried out a search and seizure operation following allegations of customer data being illegally accessed and used for customer poaching. According to Telkom, the raid occurred at the premises of a company in Johannesburg and the residence of a Telkom franchisee employee, highlighting the seriousness with which the company is approaching this breach.





This action, overseen by Gauteng High Court, led to vital confiscation of data and records instrumental in assessing the full scope of the purported misconduct. Such proactive efforts by Telkom align with the escalation of cyber threats within the nation, including rampant ransomware and data exfiltration attacks, signifying the growing concern over personal data security in the digital age.


A considerate informant heralded this clampdown, alerting Telkom to the suspect activities involving their customer database back in September 2024. The company immediately initiated an investigation, and upon obtaining actionable intelligence, they acquired a court order to expedite their search and recovery of the stolen data.


The implicated franchisee employee allegedly supplied the ill-gotten data to the third-party business where they were employed, thus facilitating the illegal poaching of Telkom clientele. Despite the severity of the allegations, Telkom reassures that there have not been any reports of customers suffering financial damages due to this scheme.


In swift response to the incident, Telkom acted with alacrity, notifying the customers potentially affected by this privacy violation at the earliest opportunity the inquiry provided. In accordance with the legal requirements of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), enacted in 2013, Telkom has also kept the South African Information Regulator informed of the situation and the ensuing steps taken.


The swift and stern measures didn't stop there; Telkom has also reported the matter to the elite Hawks unit and is pursuing legal routes to hold those responsible to account. Echoing the gravity of the issue, Telkom stated, "We consider the interest and data of our customers paramount."


To cement customer trust and forestall future breaches, Telkom has introduced an array of mitigation strategies. These are aimed at fortifying its data access protocols to provide a more robust defense against similar threats.


The context of the Telkom case fits within a larger national concern. South Africa has been identified by Allianz as a hotspot for cyberattacks. The country ranked 14th globally for such incidents. Allianz emphasizes that despite heightened investments in cybersecurity, many recent cyberattack incidents could be traced back to weak protection measures within organizations.


An illustrative case of a consequential data breach occurred in 2020, involving the credit bureau Experian. The breach was initially detected by the South African Banking Risk Centre (Sabric), impacting millions of citizens and thousands of business entities. The offender, Karabo Phungula, secured the data under false pretenses, aiming to capitalize on the heist financially before being arrested and sentenced.


Telkom's robust response to the latest breach underscores the ever-increasing stakes of cybersecurity and personal data protection, as the company takes a hard line against internal threats and cyber malfeasance.
