Thomas Dohmke, CEO of GitHub, revealed in an interview with MyBroadband the impressive statistics noting South Africa's rapid expansion in the tech sector. According to GitHub's "Octoverse" report, this expansion places the country alongside Nigeria, Egypt, and Kenya as the key African players in the technical literacy arena.

The data from GitHub demonstrates a vigorous 23% year-over-year growth in the platform's use by South African developers, numbering over 664,000 new recruits. What's particularly noteworthy is that the projects involving AI on GitHub have ballooned close to double this rate at approximately 45% year-over-year growth. Dohmke highlighted that while the tandem dance of AI development is led by behemoths in the tech industry, numerous emerging applications are sprouting atop this burgeoning technology wave.

GitHub has become fertile ground for open source components essential for AI development. Many South African developers are pioneering in this space, showcasing that AI is not just a figment of global tech giants but also of grassroots innovation.

A shining example is the project "AI_r" developed by the University of the Witwatersrand, which melds an Internet of Things sensor network with AI to craft an affordable system for monitoring air quality across South Africa. This AI-enabled project uses easily deployable boxes, each costing around R1,900, to collect air samples and analyze data using cloud-based AI. These efforts not only optimize resource use but also furnish actionable environmental insight.

Amid concerns about AI and automation rendering humans obsolete, industry analysts like Arthur Goldstuck advocate viewing AI as an augmentative tool rather than a replacement. He cites the transformation at Ford's Silverton plant in Pretoria, where automation and the introduction of robots not only maintained but expanded the workforce.
