In an exceptional display of environmental excellence and sustainable tourism, the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) has awarded the respected Blue Flag status to twenty beaches along South Africa’s scenic Garden Route. This honor, in collaboration with local coastal municipalities and private entities, is in recognition of their superior water quality, safety, security, and sound environmental management, as well as their accessibility for all.

The Garden Route is renowned for its stunning coastline and has become synonymous with unspoiled beaches and nature reserves. GRDM Executive Mayor, Andrew Stroebel, lauded the collaborative efforts that ensured the region's beaches met the stringent criteria necessary for Blue Flag accreditation—a global indication of quality favored by tourists and environmentalists alike.

Three of these beaches have been awarded as pilot sites, reflecting the region’s ongoing commitment to expanding this symbol of coastal conservation and tourist-friendly spaces. This year's Blue Flag achievement enhances the tourism profile of the Garden Route and solidifies its status as a top destination for those seeking natural beauty and eco-friendly leisure.

Additionally, this accolade doesn't stop at the beaches. The region also celebrates sustainable development in marine tourism, with two marinas—Thesen Islands and Thesen Harbour in Knysna—and two sustainable boating operations—Robberg Express and Oceanic Express operated by Offshore Adventures in Plettenberg—being recognized with Blue Flags.

Each awarded beach tells a story of local commitment to excellence. From the family-friendly shores of Hartenbos Beach in Mossel Bay to the tranquil retreat of Nature's Valley in Plettenberg Bay, visitors can anticipate only the best during their coastal explorations.

As we head toward the holiday season, beachgoers are encouraged to experience these pristine locations. Victoria Bay, for instance, proudly carries the Blue Flag status for the second consecutive year, welcoming visitors to its idyllic scenery, including fully-booked caravan park sites that suggest planning ahead to secure a spot in this paradise.

Residents and visitors can explore the full list of awarded sites and plan their itineraries accordingly, guaranteeing a Blue Flag beach experience no matter where they roam along the Garden Route.
