Polokwane Court Sentences Murderer to Life Plus 30 Years in Police Officer Killing

In a verdict that delivers a resounding message against violent crime, the Polokwane High Court has handed down a hefty sentence to 39-year-old Calvin Mphela Molomo for the 2021 murder of Tshwane Metro Police Officer, Mmatlala Margaret Matlala, amid a spate of house robberies in Bakenberg Village, Waterberg District.

The court proceedings unravelled a tale of premeditated criminal acts that led to heart-wrenching tragedy. Molomo, along with two accomplices, commenced a calculated robbery escapade, ruthlessly targeting residences within the district. The trio's malicious intent became fatal when Molomo shot and killed Officer Matlala while plundering her home. Beyond murder, the spree involved assault, wanton endangerment, and a subsequent attempt to harm Matlala’s arriving brother.

Despite Molomo's efforts to elude capture by fleeing on foot and disposing of their getaway vehicle, law enforcement officials swiftly enacted a manhunt. The decisive recovery of the vehicle opened avenues for a thorough investigation orchestrated by Sergeant Ramokone Lucy Mokhonoana. The investigative trail led to Molomo's arrest in Tembisa, where he was discovered harboring a cache of illegal weapons, one of which was tied to the criminal offences.

The court’s decision encompasses multiple charges, with Molomo receiving life imprisonment for the officer's murder and additional sentences for robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted murder, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Notably, counts of robbery and possession of unlicensed ammunition are slated to run concurrently with his life term. Furthermore, the conviction includes a stern restriction against Molomo, who now is declared unfit to ever lawfully possess a firearm.
