A Massachusetts family is embroiled in a legal tussle with a local high school following allegations that their son faced unjust punishment for utilizing artificial intelligence in preparing an assignment. Jennifer and Dale Harris contend that their son employed AI to conduct research for a history paper, and refute claims that he simulated the AI-generated work as his own.








The incident, first reported by WCVB, a Boston ABC affiliate, has escalated to a federal court filing, with the Harris family claiming that the repercussions have dire consequences for their son's future. The high school's punitive response included detention, a grade reduction, and exclusion from the National Honor Society—an honor critical to the student's college applications given his academic standing.


The filing underscores the absence of explicit guidelines in the school's policies on the utilization of AI in academic work. Though the school handbook points to the prohibition of "unauthorized use of technology, including Artificial Intelligence," as constituting cheating or plagiarism, there is a palpable lack of specificity on what constitutes authorized versus unauthorized use.


The Harris family seeks immediate redress from the federal court to revoke the zero grade from the assignment in question, restore the student's Social Studies grade to a 'B', and ensure his induction into the National Honor Society. Furthermore, the family proposes that the school define a clear AI policy, provide administrators and faculty with AI training, and implement effective classroom utilization guidelines for AI technology—measures that aim to foster clarity and fairness in the educational terrain shaped by advancing technology.
