Tech giant Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc, and the renowned automaker Volkswagen have embarked on a journey together to revolutionize the driving experience with a state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) assistant integrated into a smartphone app. This latest venture is emblematic of Google’s continued efforts to embed enterprise AI applications across various industries.

Volkswagen car owners can now interact with an in-app AI assistant, designed to simplify their driving life. Users are able to pose questions on a variety of topics, from practical day-to-day inquiries like "How do I change a flat tyre?" to complex queries that require detailed instructions. The application also boasts a visual recognition feature which allows drivers to take images of their vehicle dashboards, subsequently receiving instant, pertinent information.

Powering this sophisticated tool is Google's Gemini, a large language model touted for its ability to interpret and generate human-like responses. Trident to this technology is Google’s expansive cloud computing resources. The AI assistant is customized specifically for Volkswagen, fed with a plethora of data from owner's manuals to instructional YouTube clips on vehicle maintenance.

These advancements, as explained by Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, come with its fair share of challenges, particularly in achieving multimodality. This capability enables the AI to parse and process diverse data types including text, visuals, and videos - a task more intricate than the ostensibly simple speech-to-text systems.

The service is currently offered at no additional cost to around 120,000 owners of Volkswagen’s Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport utility vehicles. A more comprehensive rollout is anticipated by early next year for models from 2020 onwards, marking a significant stride in making this technology widely available.

Google’s ingress into the cloud market, despite ranking third after Amazon and Microsoft, is underscored by this collaborative effort with Volkswagen. The cloud computing segment is a bright spot for Google, generating $33 billion of its $307 billion revenue in 2023. The company is bullish about the AI solutions driving billions in revenue, although exact figures remain undisclosed. Meanwhile, Volkswagen has yet to reveal specifics on the user engagement with its AI assistant.

This collaboration is a pivotal example of how generative AI has the potential to reshape the current business landscape, especially in cloud computing - a sector ripe for innovations that companies can leverage in practical, user-friendly applications.
