In an event marked by jubilation and hope, the Bo-Moshe Community gathered on Thursday, 29 August 2024, to celebrate a significant milestone in South Africa’s ongoing journey toward land restitution and rural empowerment. The Minister of Land Reform and Rural Development, Mr. Mzwanele Nyhontso, alongside Mr. Madoda Sambatha, the North West MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, presided over an iconic ceremony that witnessed the success of the Bo-Moshe community land claim.

This triumph is the culmination of decades-long efforts that began with a claim lodged by Mr. Ronald Mabale in 1998 on behalf of the descendants of those dispossessed. Following stringent validation by the Commission on Restitution of Land Rights, the claim was upheld, leading to the restoration of nine out of ten portions of land, totaling an impressive 661.8639 hectares, to the Bo-Moshe Community. The restored lands, amounting to a value of over R381 million, are a poignant representation of justice and a step toward correcting past injustices.

Yet, the celebratory event not only acknowledged the land restoration but also the future it holds. The Bo-Moshe project clearly outlines the roadmap ahead, focusing on training and capacity building for sustainable development. Safriblue, partnering in this initiative, has committed R2 million annually for five years to upskill the Community Property Association (CPA) executive committee and beneficiaries. Such investments ensure the longevity and success of the community’s agricultural endeavors.

Particularly noteworthy is the project’s strong emphasis on community enhancement and job creation. The initiative has led to the generation of 35 permanent and up to 5000 seasonal jobs, with 90% of the berry picking jobs going to women from the community. This not only uplifts the community but also empowers women significantly in a sector traditionally dominated by men.

The Bo-Moshe Community's celebration is reflective of a broader theme in South African society, symbolizing a commitment to healing historical wounds through restitution and sustainable development. Celebrating 30 years since the enactment of the Restitution of Land Rights Act, the event further cements the Commission on Restitution of Land Rights' role in building an equitable and just society.
