In a heinous crime that has shocked the local community, two women lost their lives in Limpopo while on a seemingly innocuous endeavor to collect expired food. Mariah Makgato, a 47-year-old mother of four, along with 34-year-old Lucia Ndlovu, faced a gruesome end at a farm in Onvervaght, Limpopo. The incident came to light when the survivor, Ndlovu's husband, barely escaped with his life.
The owner of the Limpopo farm, Zachariah Johannes Olivier, the supervisor Andrian Rudolph De Wet, and employee William Musora have been remanded in custody following their arrests for this barbaric act. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesman for Limpopo, Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, detailed the charges facing the trio – two counts of premeditated murder, one count of attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and defeating the ends of justice.
A hidden menace lay in wait on August 17, 2024, as the victims approached the farm, where, according to a Clover truck's schedule, expired goods would be available. Unbeknownst to the victims, Olivier and De Wet allegedly preplanned to weaponize against any community members trespassing on their property. Their malicious intent culminated in a brutal attack that left two women dead and a man severely wounded, who later managed to seek help from a nearby road.
Following the dreadful shootings, the farm employee, Musora, reported the women's bodies to Olivier and De Wet rather than to the authorities. Together, they committed a chilling act by moving the bodies to the pigsties, where the pigs began to gnaw on the remains of one of the victims.
In a bid to sever the ties to their crime, Olivier is said to have destroyed the murder weapon, discarding it along the R80 road. The three men did not report the incident until three days later, delaying justice for the slain.
Authorities were notified of the murders and an attempt on the man's life, and promptly on Wednesday last week, the police apprehended the suspects. During their initial court appearance, the case was postponed until August 30 for further legal processing, while all accused remain under custody.
The community is reeling from this tragedy, as questions regarding farm security and the use of lethal force against supposed trespassers rise. The legal system now bears the weight of two lives callously disregarded and the trauma inflicted on the surviving family members and the broader public.
