In a significant boost to South Africa's tourism and air travel connectivity, Virgin Atlantic has announced the extension of its popular seasonal flights between London and Cape Town. The decision comes as a response to increased customer demand around the Easter holidays, according to the latest reports.

With a growing appetite for travel to and from South Africa's picturesque Mother City, Virgin Atlantic has found strong grounds to modify its flight schedule. Flights are now set to continue operating until April 30, 2025, providing travelers with more flexibility and options during the scenic autumn months of the Southern Hemisphere.

Virgin Atlantic's recommitment comes less than three years after the airline made a much-celebrated return to the Cape Town route, a service it had previously halted in 2015. The move to extend the service underscores the route's success and the company's confidence in the South African market. Flights operate using Virgin Atlantic’s Boeing 787-9, noted for its fuel efficiency and diverse cabin offerings. This includes the luxurious Upper Class, the enhanced comfort of Premium, and the affordability of Economy Light, Classic, and Delight – all designed to meet various travel needs and budgets.

The reestablished connectivity between London and Cape Town has been timely, coinciding with South Africa’s steady climb up the rankings of sought-after travel destinations for UK tourists. A recent study published by Time Out, listing the top 15 most affordable holiday locations based on the 18th annual Post Office Travel Money’s ‘Holiday Money Report’, placed Cape Town second. This ranking is determined by several factors, including the value of the local currency against the British pound and the cost of tourist essentials such as dining and day-to-day items.

In 2024, Cape Town experienced a slight increase in prices for these essential items, with a 5% rise pushing the cost to an average of £54.35. Despite this, the allure of Cape Town remains strong, buoyed by its breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and hospitality.

Virgin Atlantic's service extension is poised to facilitate growth in inbound tourism, contribute to economic development and foster closer ties between South Africa and the United Kingdom. With direct flights now operating daily since their November 2022 resumption, connectivity is better than ever, giving travelers the convenience and the opportunity to explore one of the world's most stunning cities and its environs.

For those in the UK eyeing an affordable yet exotic getaway, Cape Town continues to be an attractive destination. And for South Africans, the extended Virgin Atlantic route offers a direct line to the heart of London, a city steeped in history, entertainment, and business opportunities – all just a flight away.
