Foxconn's Chair Addresses Workforce Gender Composition Amid Hiring Practice Controversy in India

In a press statement released during the inauguration of a new hostel complex for workers in Sriperumbudur near Chennai, Foxconn's chair, Young Liu, spoke out in defense of the company's hiring practices in India—especially about gender diversity in the workplace. This comes after the company faced scrutiny following a Reuters report that suggested the tech giant, a key supplier for Apple, had been rejecting married women from iPhone assembly jobs.


Foxconn, which is known for its significant role in the global supply chain of electronics, particularly in the manufacturing of iPhones, has been under the spotlight for its workforce's gender makeup and employment practices. The controversy gained momentum leading to the Indian government stepping in and demanding an investigation into the claims of discrimination against married women in the employment process.


Young Liu's statement emphasized the company's position on equality and diversity by stating that Foxconn hires individuals irrespective of gender and highlighted the crucial contributions of married women to the company. He proudly mentioned that women form a substantial part of Foxconn's workforce in India, which is seen within the context of a larger movement towards workplace inclusivity and gender equality across various sectors in India.


The company acknowledged some lapses in its hiring processes previously in 2022 but has expressed a strong refutation of any allegations pertaining to employment discrimination. As a response to the outcry and government involvement, Foxconn detailed its employee structure mentioning that of its 41,281 employees at their main India iPhone factory, 33,360 are women, and out of those, 2,750 are married, roughly making up 8% of the female workforce.


Foxconn's expansion in India reinforces its commitment to the region, where it not only assembles iPhones but is also looking to diversify its manufacturing capabilities into producing AirPods and venturing into the chipmaking industry. Liu’s meetings with India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and top officials have highlighted the company’s investments and the importance of India in Foxconn's strategy for growth.


Through the positive step of opening new hostel facilities specifically for its female workers, Foxconn has showcased its efforts to create a more inclusive and supportive work environment. These hostels are expected to house 18,720 Foxconn female workers, providing them with closer accommodations to their workplace.


However, the international scrutiny and the ongoing investigations underscore the larger issue of workplace equality and the need for transparent hiring practices. With commitments from high-level executives like Young Liu, it is expected that companies like Foxconn will continue to address and improve their workforce diversity strategies, creating a more balanced and fair working environment for all employees.
