The gaming console market in South Africa has stayed resilient, especially for Sony's PlayStation 5, which has seen sustained interest following the release of the PS5 Slim model. Gamefinity CEO Mario Dos Santos confirms that the streamlined version has been well-received by gamers in the country, marking Sony's continuous success after more than three years since the debut of the original PS5.
Sony introduced the PS5 Slim to the South African market in early April 2024, maintaining the price point of the previous models despite its more compact design. The Slim edition is not only 30% smaller but also lighter, providing gamers with a sleeker, more space-efficient console that doesn't spare performance. The innovation of being able to upgrade the digital-only console by adding a disc drive has also created a unique proposition for consumers.
The transition has seen a shift in consumer preference with the digital console gaining a larger share of sales. The rising cost of the disc-based model — from an original R11,999 to R13,999 due to the devaluation of the rand — has potentially influenced the tilt towards the digital model, priced at the original launch price of the standard disc variant.
Additionally, Gamefinity has experienced higher than expected sales of the recently launched PS5 Portal, enabling gamers to stream their PS5 games over Wi-Fi, suggesting robust brand loyalty and ecosystem penetration. Despite a somewhat weaker content release slate in early 2024 as compared to the previous year, the year-end outlook is optimistic with anticipated promotions and a presumable boost in game releases.
Globally, the PS5 maintains a marked lead over the Xbox Series X|S in sales, having sold twice as many units since their launch in November 2020. However, Sony is not resting on its laurels, with rumors of a PS5 Pro model possibly emerging in late 2024. Leaked specifications and a removed YouTube video indicating high-end performance equivalent to the most advanced gaming PCs hint at what could possibly further enhance Sony’s standing in the gaming market.
As Sony's console continues to engage the market with its evolving hardware and digital ecosystem, South Africa remains an active player in the global console wars with a strong leaning towards the PlayStation brand.
