Cape Town, South Africa β The search for Medhi Narjissi, a 17-year-old French school rugby player feared drowned off Diaz Beach at Cape Point, has been suspended due to challenging marine conditions. The strong rip currents swept the teen into the surf zone, leading to extensive but unsuccessful search efforts.
Medhi, a member of the French under-18 schools rugby team, was partaking in a beach outing on Wednesday when this unfortunate incident occurred. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), alongside other rescue services including the Skymed rescue helicopter, four rescue craft, and shoreline rescue crews, embarked on robust search operations. Hindered by 3 to 4-metre swells and a 15 knot northerly wind, the rescue efforts yielded no sign of the young rugby player.
Despite facing severe weather, a teenage teammate made a valiant attempt to save Medhi but managed to reach the shore unharmed. Unfortunately, the worsening sea conditions led authorities to pause the search temporarily.
In response to the incident, various organizations and individuals have relayed their heartfelt concerns and support. Craig Lambinon, NSRI spokesperson, conveyed their deepest thoughts and compassion to Medhi's loved ones and teammates. The French Rugby Federation expressed its profound distress and assured ongoing support to both the family of the missing player and the U-18 team currently in South Africa.
The rugby community in South Africa and internationally have felt the weight of this shocking news. Mark Alexander, president of the SA Rugby Union, emphasized their commitment to support the French team and Medhiβs family, alongside acknowledging the uncertain impact on the upcoming International Series tournament to be held in Cape Town.
French authorities, in collaboration with the City of Cape Town tourism department, are assisting in providing counselling and logistics during this trying time, while the search is expected to resume as soon as conditions permit.
The heartfelt solidarity displayed across the international rugby fraternity during this dire situation illustrates the profound bond uniting members of the sporting community worldwide. Further updates will be provided in due course, as concerned parties hold onto hope for Medhi's safe return.
