Search Efforts for Missing French Rugby Teen Halted by Harsh Seas at Cape Point

Cape Town, South Africa – The search for Medhi Narjissi, a 17-year-old French school rugby player feared drowned off Diaz Beach at Cape Point, has been suspended due to challenging marine conditions. The strong rip currents swept the teen into the surf zone, leading to extensive but unsuccessful search efforts.

Medhi, a member of the French under-18 schools rugby team, was partaking in a beach outing on Wednesday when this unfortunate incident occurred. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), alongside other rescue services including the Skymed rescue helicopter, four rescue craft, and shoreline rescue crews, embarked on robust search operations. Hindered by 3 to 4-metre swells and a 15 knot northerly wind, the rescue efforts yielded no sign of the young rugby player.

Despite facing severe weather, a teenage teammate made a valiant attempt to save Medhi but managed to reach the shore unharmed. Unfortunately, the worsening sea conditions led authorities to pause the search temporarily.

Craig Lambinon, NSRI spokesperson, conveyed their deepest thoughts and compassion to Medhi's loved ones and teammates.
