South Africa Ramps Up Efforts to Contain Foot-and-Mouth Disease with New Rapid Response Team

South Africa's agricultural sector has met with a proactive initiative as Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen officially announces the formation of a dedicated rapid response team aimed at tackling the alarming outbreaks of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) affecting the nation.

In response to rising cases and the urgent need for containment, the team has been formed in accordance with section 2(1) of the Animal Diseases Act and is part of a strategic move coming after Minister Steenhuisen’s declaration of Disease Management Areas to control the movement of cattle, sheep, goats, and related products. This stringent measure is meant to prevent the further spread of this highly contagious disease, which poses significant threats to the country’s livestock industry.

The appointed team involves a cadre of seven accomplished individuals from government and industry sectors, each bringing a wealth of expertise to the frontline fight against FMD. Notably, the team includes veterinary professionals such as Dr. Mpho Maja, a renowned animal health expert, and Dr. Shaun Morris, both of whom are experienced in disease outbreak management and control measures.

Their mandate spans critical decision-making and immediate support, with a particular focus on initial action within the crucial first 48-hour window following any new outbreak. Such rapid engagement is vital to controlling the disease's spread and reducing the overall impact on affected communities and the broader agricultural economy.

Additionally, the team's role encompasses ensuring consistent communication channels are maintained, providing guidance to farmers on handling and processing milk, meat, or other produce in and out of regulated areas, and integrating agricultural economists to assess and mitigate the economic impacts.

By harnessing expertise from various disciplines, the government aims to fortify the nation against the disruptions that Foot-and-Mouth Disease can cause, not just on a biological front, but also regarding the wellbeing of farmers and the stability of food supplies and trade.
