Cape Town's affluent suburb of Bel Ombre is witnessing the transformation of one of its most enigmatic residences - a mansion once occupied by the infamous Gupta family. The property, 10 Dawnry Lane, had fallen into a state of disrepair after being deserted amidst the Gupta's rapid exit from South Africa. It's new UK-based owner, unconcerned with its notorious history, is now breathing new life into the once derelict estate.

Formerly home to the son of the UK's ex-prime minister Margaret Thatcher, who was convicted for participation in an Equatorial Guinea coup attempt, and the Gupta family, who famously fled South Africa amid 'grand state capture plans' revelations, the mansion is turning over a new leaf. Despite its controversial past, the renovation symbolizes a fresh start in one of Cape Town's most expensive residential areas, known for its luxurious estates.

Recent visits to the property by the media revealed significant ongoing work. Roxanne Walters, the contractor for the new owner, dispelled rumors of demolition, confirming that the mansion’s structure stands firm against the tides of history. The goal is ambitious and robust, aiming to complete the grand project by next February. With a blueprint that boasts eight bedrooms, the estate is set to reclaim its former glory, undeterred by the capricious weather that slightly delays progress.

In a stark contrast to its envisaged splendor, a worker shared tales of the mansion as it stood after the Guptas' exodus - fully furnished but left to the mercy of plunderers once the assets were seized. What remained was a skeletal version of affluence, stripped of water pipes, taps, cameras, and all semblance of its former luxury by undeterred vagrants.

A residence steeped in political drama and decline is now on the cusp of a revival. As physical renovations mend the disrepair, one wonders if the mansion’s image in public consciousness will also undergo renovation.
