Media24 Secures Journalist Jobs, Halts Sale of Beeld Amid Restructuring

In a notable development for the South African media landscape, Media24 has made a significant stride toward safeguarding journalism jobs by announcing that it will retain the 66 newspaper journalists involved with Beeld, City Press, Daily Sun, and Rapport. The decision marks a reversal from earlier restructuring plans which threatened to close the print editions of these well-known publications.

This initiative stems from Media24's intentions announced last month to overhaul its operations in the wake of declining advertising revenues and circulation figures. The initial plan would have seen around 400 employees at risk of losing their jobs across various departments. However, after extensive consultations and a reevaluation of strategy, the company has decided to absorb the journalists into its existing digital platforms, including Netwerk24, News24, and the Daily Sun website.

Ishmet Davidson, CEO of Media24, highlighted the deliberate efforts to minimize job losses, especially among journalists, labeling the move as a significant success in the ongoing negotiations with employees regarding the proposed shutdowns. According to Davidson, the decision reflects careful deliberation and a commitment to preserve professional journalism in an era increasingly dominated by digital media.

The retention of these journalists is a part of Media24's larger transition away from traditional print media in response to evolving consumer trends favoring digital content. The 66 journalists in question are considered critical in maintaining the content quality and integrity for which these publications are known.

In parallel, Media24 has decided not to sell Beeld, an Afrikaans-language daily with a considerable legacy and sentimental value. This is a change in direction from previous considerations to offload the paper in an effort to avoid job cuts. This decision highlights Media24's commitment to maintaining its journalistic presence and legacy in South Africa.

This announcement accompanies news that Media24 is also progressing with divestitures and restructuring in other business areas. They have accepted an offer from Novus Holdings for their community newspapers, On the Dot, and Soccer Laduma, while rival media company Capital Newspapers/Caxton expressed interest in acquiring parts of the business.

Despite these changes, Media24 has stated it will continue to provide digital presences for Beeld and Volksblad on Netwerk24, ensuring these publications remain accessible to their readership in a digital format.

Davidson underscored that no structural changes or closures would proceed without the Competition Commission's approval. Media24 expects the commission's decision by the end of October 2024 and views the retention of journalists as an essential investment in future journalism.
