In a significant move to stimulate economic development and community enrichment, the George Municipality has launched the Thembalethu Node Development Project named “Ilisolethu Precinct.” This announcement signifies a pivotal step toward establishing a thriving community hub in Thembalethu, a densely populated suburb of George recognized for its high potential for growth.
Thembalethu, within the George Municipal Spatial Development Framework (MSDF), has been acknowledged as a priority investment hub. Executive Mayor Jackie Von Brandis underlined that the Ilisolethu Project would advance social, economic, and residential upliftment whilst drawing in investments that can enhance urban regeneration and communal vibrancy.
A collaboration with the National Treasury has led to the initiation of the Thembalethu Node 1 Development Project. Service provider Cadre Connect has been entrusted with the creation of an Investment Strategy and Area Management Strategy. They have also pinpointed 11 Investment Project Packages with an emphasis on inclusive economic progress and public space enhancement.
The heart of the Ilisolethu Precinct is along Nelson Mandela Boulevard, with 11 envisioned projects planned to elevate the district. These projects range from the Nelson Mandela Boulevard Multi-Purpose Identity Route, poised to facilitate improved traffic flow and public transportation, to the Ilisolethu Interchange Gateway Development, designed to meld economic and residential development. Additionally, an innovative Business Processing Outsourcing Village is intended to foster job creation, and a mixed-use core will gather diverse stakeholders in a high-density setting.
Key among the precinct's offerings is the Dlabs, SafeHub Facility, and Call Centre, along with an Inkcubeko Youth and Science Centre Extension geared toward educational upliftment. The project's scope further extends to SMME and Recycling Hubs, Park Run and Trim Park Recreation Routes, and an array of other public and sports development initiatives.
George Municipality's resourceful steps have garnered support from the Neighbourhood Development Partnership Programme of the National Treasury, enabling them to commence the implementation phase. Ward 13 Councillor Simphiwe Toto, along with the ward committee, has spearheaded community involvement in conceptualizing the Ilisolethu brand, a proactive approach exemplified by extensive workshops and engagements with key stakeholders.
The outline for the Ilisolethu Precinct has received formal endorsements from the George Municipal Council and a workshop with Thembalethu’s ward committee members has secured widespread support. An Interim Area Management Committee, bringing together relevant Municipal Departments, has been set up to ensure the continuity and success of the venture.
Aimed to evolve over five years, contingent on funds and confirmed partnerships, the Ilisolethu Precinct promises a transformative impact, generating a synergy of economic and social development. The aspirations for Thembalethu’s renewal involve all levels of government and private sector partnerships, setting the cornerstone for a dynamic future.
