Kromdraai Community Gets Digital Lift with New Free GPN Wi-Fi

Residents of the Kromdraai area in the West Rand, Gauteng, are set for transformation as they embark on a digital journey facilitated by the launch of free Wi-Fi at Matla Combined School. This initiative, provided by the Gauteng Department of e-Government (e-Gov), is part of the broader Gauteng Provincial Network (GPN) and aims at modernizing government services and providing citizens with access to the digital world.

Gauteng’s e-Gov has taken leaps in rolling out broadband connectivity that aims to link all public spaces including schools and hospitals. The effort doesn't just stop at infrastructure; it encompasses providing free public Wi-Fi to foster connectivity throughout the province of Gauteng.

At the heart of the initiatives, Gauteng MEC for the Department of e-Government, Bonginkosi Dhlamini, emphasized the government's ambition to make digital services easily accessible and rid communities of the need to endure long queues for services that are available online. These words came as he unveiled the Wi-Fi project on Sunday, reinforcing that the digital divide can be bridged with the effective use of technology.

The significance of this development is profound for the Kromdraai community, which has faced the challenge of poor connectivity due to its location on the fringes of the West Rand. Mogale City's Mayor, Danny Thupane, not only expressed the community’s excitement but also highlighted the added relief from the financial pressures of costly data. It's a milestone that's expected to enhance residents' ability to obtain information, communicate, and pursue socioeconomic opportunities.

This launch aligns with the macro vision of the South African government. Back in April, the Ministry of Communications and Digital Technologies set an ambitious plan to link 5.5 million rural and township homes to Wi-Fi hotspots within the next three to four years. Such strides in connectivity foster the modernization of service delivery and eradicate redundancies in ICT within the provincial government. Moreover, ensuring secure information systems remains a priority in this effort.

The GPN Wi-Fi is more than just an internet connection; it's a gateway to limitless possibilities in education, skill development, career opportunities, and improved efficiency in accessing various government and personal services.
