The Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) has recently welcomed a significant expansion to its Roads Department as it took ownership of five new vehicles, each with an approximate value of R500,000. This acquisition represents the Municipality's ongoing commitment to maintaining high standards of road service delivery across the picturesque Garden Route.
The handover event was marked by the presence of notable local government leaders including the GRDM Executive Mayor, Alderman Andrew Stroebel, Executive Deputy Mayor, Alderman Vlancio Donson, Mayoral Committee Chairperson (MMC) for Roads Services Councillor Stag Cronje, among others. The support staff, along with GRDM Municipal Manager Monde Stratu, all gathered at the Roads Team's main depot in George to witness the historic moment.
Funded by the Western Cape Government, these vehicles join the existing "yellow fleet" and are expected to significantly improve the functions of all fifteen Roads teams within the district. Over the past two years, the GRDM Roads Department has undergone substantial development, with the addition of ten Maintenance and Construction Graders, bringing the value of their graders to just over R50 million. Furthermore, twelve new Vans were also incorporated into their logistics over the same period.
These latest additions are set to enhance the GRDM's ability to offer continued excellence in road maintenance and construction, ensuring the roads are not only safe but also connecting the various locales and agricultural zones, encompassing even the rural areas of the Garden Route.
With the increasing demand for well-maintained infrastructure fueled by commerce and tourism, the GRDM's investment in its Roads Department underlines a strategic move to foster safer and more efficient travel for residents and visitors alike. Such investments are pivotal for the economic growth and development of the region and underscore the commitment of local officials to the well-being and prosperity of their communities.
The enhanced fleet will provide the Roads Department with the necessary resources to tackle a myriad of projects geared towards road improvement, repair, and maintenance. This is also expected to facilitate quicker response times to road issues and potentially stimulate job creation within the road maintenance sector.
As the GRDM celebrates this milestone, the Municipality assures residents and stakeholders that the enhanced yellow fleet will serve as a testament to the local government's pledge towards sustainable development, public safety, and improved quality of life for all within the Garden Route area.
