Search for Missing Cargo Ship as Storms Cause Havoc on Cape West Coast

A grave situation has unfolded off the Cape west coast where a cargo ship, the Ultra Galaxy, is feared to have sunk following the abandonment by its crew in perilous sea conditions. The South African Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa) has been working tirelessly to determine the vessel's fate since it was last seen approximately 60 nautical miles from Doringbaai.

The 18 Filipino crew members were forced to leave the 124-meter-long cargo vessel on Monday when it started listing dangerously amid rough seas. They were ultimately recovered from a life raft by two cargo vessels and a fishing boat after having issued a distress call. The crew was safely escorted to St Helena Bay by the fishing vessel FV Malachite.

The rescue mission's confirmation came from Samsa spokesperson Tebogo Ramatjie, who also expressed concerns over potential environmental threats due to unknown cargo the ship might have been carrying. Samsa dispatched two tugs with hopes of reaching the vessel's last reported coordinates by Tuesday afternoon.

Simultaneously, the Western Cape province has been grappling with severe weather, prompting NGOs like Gift of the Givers to provide emergency relief. The organization has distributed thousands of meals and blankets and mobilized resources from across the country to support the growing needs of the affected communities.

Areas like Khayelitsha witnessed significant flooding due to the intense cold fronts, leading to the displacement of thousands and subsequent calls for help which have been heeded by various teams on the ground. The actual number of those impacted is under ongoing assessment, but the initial figures are already staggering.

Cape Town's disaster risk management, led by spokesperson Sonica Lategan, has been inundating with reports from multiple regions hit hard by the storms. Efforts are directed towards providing immediate relief, with the commitment to detailed assessments and necessary assistance standing as priority measures for the city.

The Ultra Galaxy's disappearance adds to an already bleak picture painted by the storm's devastation, pointing to an escalating emergency response situation along the Cape west coast.
