In a challenging economic climate characterized by high inflation, low growth, and intermittent load shedding, Caxton & CTP Publishers & Printers Limited has reported a reduction in interim revenue. The numbers revealed a 3.3% decrease to R3.69 billion for the six months ending in December, as disclosed by the group last Friday. This fall encompasses the impact of the disposal and cessation of a subsidiary, marking a R163.7 million withdrawal from their revenue.
The detailed financial figures for the company paint a clear picture of the difficulties they face in our current economic context. While the group acknowledges a slight uptick of R36.2 million in revenue if excluding the mentioned subsidiary, the overall drop reflects broader industry woes. Reduced outputs in printing and decreased media advertising revenues have been substantial contributors to the downturn, as national retailers cut back their budgets in an effort to reconcile with constrained consumer spending behaviors.
Despite the downturn, Caxton demonstrated robust cost management with significant cost reductions, including a R18.4 million cut in staff costs and a R48.2 million decrease in operational costs. However, it's essential to note that, aside from the impact of the subsidiary sale, there was an actual increase in staff and operational costs, suggesting underlying challenges.
Operating profit took a hit before and after depreciation and amortisation, with earnings per share dropping notably by 29.2%. Nonetheless, there was a silver lining in their strong cash flow, with an impressive R1.81 billion in cash and cash equivalents, marking a substantial year-on-year increase. The resilience of the packaging business also stood out, showing growth in revenue despite the adversities faced.
Looking ahead, Caxton doesn't anticipate a significant turnaround in trading conditions and even prepares for possible further declination. They plan to maintain stringent management of costs and remain vigilant for acquisition opportunities that can offer better use of their substantial cash reserves.
The group's financial health, while impacted, still demonstrates an undercurrent of strength with such cash balances and an unwavering willingness to seek growth avenues. The full financial announcement can be expected around 8 March 2024 and will be accessible on the company's website as well as the JSE's news service portal.
