In what is being regarded as a significant environmental setback for Northern California, approximately 830,000 Chinook salmon fry, which were recently released into the Klamath River, are believed to have perished. These losses stem from a case of gas bubble disease, a condition induced by abrupt changes in water pressure, according to the California Fish and Wildlife Department (CDFW). This unfortunate incident underscores the ongoing challenges facing salmon populations in the region and raises significant questions about the management of aquatic ecosystems.


The salmon fry had been released into the river on February 26 and were part of the first batch from the newly built Fall Creek Fish Hatchery—a $35 million investment aimed at bolstering the Chinook salmon numbers in anticipation of the Klamath River becoming fully undammed. The removal of the Iron Gate Dam and the associated tunnel, where the gas bubble trauma occurred, is slated for later in the year, marking a pivotal moment in the river's history.


The exact number of salmon fry that succumbed to the disease is yet to be determined, but officials have described the event as having a "high mortality rate."
