Minister Senzo Mchunu Prioritizes Completion of Mandlakazi Regional Bulk Water Scheme

In a significant development that promises to alleviate the water woes of thousands in South Africa, Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu has intensified efforts to expedite the Mandlakazi Regional Bulk Water Scheme. This vital initiative, once completed, will bring much-needed relief to the communities of Mandlakazi, situated between the towns of Kwa-Nongoma and Mkhuze in Zululand District Municipality, and Hlabisa in uMkhanyakude District Municipality.

The project, which is in response to the persistent water supply challenges faced by these communities, gained momentum after Minister Mchunu’s decision to place the scheme under the direct purview of his department. This move came on the heels of a meeting with various water authorities, wherein it was determined that the project was suffering from substantial delays, thereby impacting its socio-economic potential across two significant districts.

Department spokeswoman Wisane Mavasa clarified the strategic role reallocation in the administrative hierarchy. Zululand District Municipality will now spearhead Phases 5 and 6 of the scheme, a strategic move set to benefit approximately 279,297 individuals. Phase 5 encompasses the main pipeline from Jozini Dam to the Mandlakazi Water Treatment Works, along with supplementary pipeline projects within the Mandlakazi footprint. Phase 6 is dedicated to the construction of a water reticulation network that promises to ensure door-to-door water supply within the Esiphambanweni community.

As the communities await the scheme's full realization, interim measures, notably the provision of emergency storage reservoirs, have been deployed to cater to the pressing needs in the Hlabisa area. Since 20 February, the projects, including Reservoir 12 Mthwadlana and Reservoir 22 Miyaneni, have been undergoing test commissions, a step indicating imminent operational readiness. These reservoirs are set to distribute water east and west of Hlabisa to villages and towns in dire need.

The diligent efforts to bring this ambitious project to fruition underscore the government's commitment to resolving chronic infrastructure challenges. The Mandlakazi Regional Bulk Water Scheme is more than a construction venture; it represents a leap toward securing the well-being and sustainability of local communities through the provision of one of the most fundamental human needs—access to clean water.
