In the bustling township of Khayelitsha, young entrepreneurs have found a beacon of hope and innovation in the form of the Youth in Business programme. This City-funded initiative, led by UVU Africa and backed by the City of Cape Town, has emerged as a catalyst for economic growth and empowerment for the community's youthful business enthusiasts.
At the core of this transformative journey is the tenacity and vision of these budding entrepreneurs who have taken the lessons from the Youth in Business programme and translated them into real-world success. Two such entrepreneurs, Lwandile Mxhamli of Eezy Technologies and Siphokuhle Mcotshana of Mcotshana Holdings, have had their entrepreneurial dreams take flight, turning them into realities that employ and inspire others.
Eezy Technologies, established by Mxhamli, is an ICT business that has seen substantial growth since its inception three years ago. With services that range from IT support to graphic design, Eezy Technologies has cemented its place in the community by addressing the ever-present technological needs of individuals and businesses in Khayelitsha.
Participation in the Youth in Business programme in 2022 provided Mxhamli with invaluable experience, including a robust 10-day bootcamp designed to finesse his business concept and instill the necessary management competencies. This program played an instrumental role in scaling Eezy Technologies to a point where it not only serves the community but also creates employment.
Similarly, Mcotshana's company, Mcotshana Holdings, traced a comet's trajectory in the construction sector. Founded in the very same year he participated in the programme, Mcotshana utilized the knowledge and skills garnered from the bootcamp to drive his company towards success.
The ripple effect of these success stories is evident in their contribution to the local economy. Today, Eezy Technologies has grown to employ three staff members, while Mcotshana Holdings has offered jobs to 25 individuals. Their growth exemplifies the potential of the Youth in Business programme to not just start businesses but also enhance the socio-economic landscape of the community.
The Khayelitsha Bandwidth Barn, where the Youth in Business initiative is based, continues to serve as an incubator for aspiring business minds. Through constant guidance and support, it turns ambitious business ideas into viable enterprises that add value to the local economy.
Alderman James Vos, the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, during his visit to the programme participants, witnessed firsthand the transformations made possible by the programme. These entrepreneurial success stories validate the City's efforts and investment in nurturing young talent and underscore the significance of empowering the youth to shape their futures through entrepreneurship.
As this programme progresses, the City of Cape Town and UVU Africa hope to amplify its impact, fostering a community where innovation, economic growth, and job creation thrive, all thanks to the indomitable spirit of young entrepreneurs from Khayelitsha.
