GECF Collaborates with AFREC and ERIA to Boost Energy Security and Sustainable Development

The Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), in a landmark move on the sidelines of the 7th GECF Summit held on March 1, 2024, in Algiers, Algeria, solidified its commitment to enhancing global energy security and sustainability by signing two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the African Energy Commission (AFREC) and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA).

These strategic partnerships are set to bolster cooperation between the GECF and key regions instrumental in shaping the future of the global natural gas industry. This collaboration aligns with the GECF's cornerstones to affirm the sovereignty of member countries over their natural gas resources and facilitate strategic relations for the welfare of their people.

Through the MoU with AFREC, the GECF highlights its dedication towards eradicating energy poverty and solidifying energy security across Africa. As a collective stance, both organizations target the stimulation of socio-economic growth through sustainable practices. The collaboration is devised to execute activities encompassing energy market analysis, data exchange, endorsement of technology innovation, and strategies for energy system decarbonisation.

HE Eng. Mohamed Hamel, Secretary General of the GECF, pinpointed the necessity for significant investment across natural gas industry value chains, emphasizing the need to ease financing to invigorate socio-economic progress and facilitate regional convergence. Equally vocal about the pivotal role natural gas plays in Africa's energy matrix, H.E. Dr Amani Abou-Zeid, African Union Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, spotlighted the transformative potential of natural gas in elevating energy access, spurring sustainable development, fortifying energy security, and contributing substantially to climatic mitigation efforts.

The synergy between GECF and ERIA underscores an enlightened approach towards mutual understanding, shared goals of endorsing sustainable, equitable, and environmentally sound energy sector development in East and Southeast Asia. The partnership entails a spectrum of activities from information and data exchange to the organization of workshops and joint research, aimed at driving technology advancements and economic amalgamation in the ASEAN and East Asian domains.

Further entrenching the narrative, HE Hamel mentioned the critical influence natural gas holds in attaining the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal #7, which focuses on ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all. Professor Jun Arima of ERIA expressed insights on the region's energy transition, highlighting the need for diverse decarbonization pathways, technology amalgamation, and the strategic shift from coal-fired to more efficient gas-fired power plants.

Both agreements signed at the GECF Summit are indicative of a shared vision towards stabilizing energy demand volatility and propelling the natural gas industry forward. In doing so, the GECF, along with its new partners AFREC and ERIA, reinforce their roles as catalysts for energy solutions and advocate for sustainable progress in their respective sectors.

With the GECF's membership encompassing nineteen countries, its coalition with these specialist agencies — AFREC and ERIA — not only denotes a powerful stride in international energy cooperation but also a future where emerging technologies and sustainable practices take precedence in the world's journey towards a cleaner, secure, and more integrated energy future.
