Aggressive Seal Attack Injures Tourists During Cape Town Dive

In a startling wildlife encounter, a group of tourists and locals experienced a frightening sequence of events when a seal aggressively attacked them during a scuba diving trip off Oudekraal Beach, Cape Town. The incident, which took place shortly after 10 am last Saturday, resulted in several injuries among the group of divers.

According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), eight people, who had journeyed on a dive charter boat, were just getting ready to begin their underwater adventure when the unexpected happened. A seal, behaviorally unpredictable, suddenly started to swim amongst the group and commenced to bite a number of the participants aggressively.

Craig Lambinon, a spokesperson for NSRI, detailed the immediate response following the attack. The boat crew, which consisted of four members, efficiently managed to bring all divers back onto the vessel. They then made an urgent call to the emergency services to ensure medical assistance was on its way to the affected individuals.

The rescue operation was set in motion as the City of Cape Town’s water rescue network was alerted to the incident. The dive charter boat made its way towards Oceana Power Boat Club (OPBC), with injured divers urgently needing medical care onboard.

Upon arrival at the OPBC, paramedics attended to two patients who had sustained puncture wounds from the seal's bites. One was a Portuguese lady, who had to be transported to the hospital in a stable condition. The other, a South African lady, was hurt but did not require hospitalization, instead, she was advised to seek out medical attention for preventative care.

Other members of the group, comprising both locals and international tourists from Brazil, France, and Germany, suffered minor wounds. They were assessed by paramedics at the scene and, though not requiring immediate hospitalization, were strongly advised to visit a healthcare facility for broad-spectrum antibiotics and to take treatments as a precaution against rabies and tetanus.

Thankfully, not everyone in the party was bitten. Two participants managed to evade any contact and escaped unharmed. As a course of action, local authorities along with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) were informed of the event.

In light of this incident, NSRI issued a statement emphasizing the importance of vigilance for bathers and divers in the Oudekraal vicinity. The authorities are seeking to raise awareness about the potential dangers, reminding the public that while interactions with marine wildlife can be thrilling, they can also pose serious risks.

This incident marks another addition to previous reports of seal aggression towards humans in the region, highlighting a pattern that had led to alarming confrontations. Prior instances include the death of a seal last year due to stress after repeated harassment by beach-goers and an attack on an American actress provoked by individuals on Clifton Fourth Beach.

To address the issue, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE) has been clear in their message that harassing seals is not only dangerous but is also an offense that could be prosecuted. They stress the importance of maintaining a respectful distance from these wild animals to ensure the safety of both humans and the seals themselves.
