Western Cape Magistrate’s Killer Sentenced to 20 Years

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Western Cape has issued a statement expressing their approval of the recent sentencing in a high-profile murder case that has shaken the legal community. The accused, Cassidy Hartzenberg, 20, was sentenced to an effective 20 years of direct imprisonment for the murder of his aunt, Magistrate Romay van Rooyen, who lost her life in September 2022.

Magistrate van Rooyen was found deceased at her home in Marina Da Gama, near Muizenberg, after being strangled by Hartzenberg, signifying a tragic twist in familial relations and a loss to the judicial community. Further intensifying this tragic event, Hartzenberg has also received a concurrent six-year sentence for the theft of van Rooyen's vehicle.

NPA Spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila communicated the gravity of the situation given the relationship between the killer and the victim. Van Rooyen was a respected individual who, before serving as a magistrate, had been an advocate within the NPA itself. The personal connection to the case added a layer of sorrow to the already distressing process of sentencing.

Ntabazalila noted the irony in the relationship, as van Rooyen had cared for Hartzenberg and his family, both emotionally and financially. Compounding the tragedy, Hartzenberg, a self-confessed drug user, committed the crime following an incident where his request for money was declined by van Rooyen.

The sentencing reflects the efforts of the South African judicial system to address crime within the country, showcasing both the reverence for the law and the respect for the emotional complexities surrounding this case.
