Tragic Braamfontein Shooting Claims Life of University of Johannesburg Student

The University of Johannesburg community is in mourning following a devastating shooting incident in Braamfontein that left one of its students dead and another injured. The incident took place on Thursday afternoon and caused major disruptions in the Johannesburg CBD, with two men also losing their lives in the attack.

The deceased student, an 18-year-old second-year student, was reportedly traveling on a university bus from the campus to his place of residence within the city center when the tragic incident unfolded. Alongside the other victims in the vehicle, the student became an unintended casualty in a shooting that brazenly took place in broad daylight, opposite the Wits Arts Museum.

Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, a spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS), reported that the suspects involved in the shooting remain unidentified. The dire consequences of their actions resulted in three fatalities and a wounded student who is currently receiving medical treatment in hospital.

In a heartfelt statement, the University of Johannesburg expressed its profound sadness over the loss and acknowledged the impact of the event on the student community. As the hunt for the suspects advances, authorities are encouraging anyone with useful information to come forward and utilize the Crime Stop Line or the MySapsApp to provide anonymous tip-offs.

The ripple effect of the shooting extended to traffic flow within the area, with multiple street closures as investigators cordoned off the scene. Despite the disruption, Wits University has confirmed that none of their students or staff sustained injuries during the incident.
