Spar, the renowned retail giant, is making significant strides in the realm of sustainable and rapid delivery services, challenging its competitor Checkers Sixty60 with a commitment to innovation and environment-friendly operations. Its latest venture, Spar2U, is not just about speeding up the delivery process but is also geared towards reducing carbon footprints by integrating an impressive fleet of 65 electrified vehicles.

In an insightful discussion with Blake Raubenheimer, the omnichannel executive at Spar Group, it is clear that Spar has invested heavily – to the tune of R6.2 million – in establishing its Spar2U fleet. The fleet’s richness lies in its variety, featuring 52 swift City Buzz 2 scooters, twelve three-wheelers, and a City Van, all dedicated to ensuring rapid and efficient service delivery to Spar2U customers.

Spar’s electric vehicles shine in their performance capabilities: while the three-wheelers boast the longest range of up to 100km per charge, the City Buzz 2 scooters and the Van follow closely with a still impressive 80km range. Their quick charging time is equally impressive, especially the City Buzz 2's batteries that can reach full charge in just three hours – a significant time-saver compared to the eight hours required for other vehicles in the fleet.

Possibly even more important than the speed of delivery is the innovative manner in which these vehicles are powered. Raubenheimer emphasizes the retailer’s dual charging approach, harnessing both solar energy and the grid – a split commitment that ensures 50% of the power is derived from sustainable sources. This eco-conscious strategy is set to offset approximately 3.27 tons of carbon emissions annually per bike, marking a huge leap towards Spar’s environmental goals.

Looking ahead, Raubenheimer highlights ongoing negotiations to integrate into burgeoning charging networks and potential collaboration with shopping centers for eco-friendly charging solutions. Such steps underline the group's resolve to broaden the reach and availability of Spar2U while simultaneously amplifying its positive environmental impact.

This vision ultimately culminates in Spar’s ambitious target of attaining a 50% green fleet by 2025, setting the bar high for industry peers. The introduction of "hot-swap" battery stations is one of the initiatives on the horizon aimed at further facilitating this clean energy evolution, emphasizing quick and efficient energy solutions for the continually moving delivery drivers.

The cost of powering this fleet is significant but justified by the anticipated benefits – Spar currently shells out R10,960 daily to energize these vehicles, with the charging expense for each varying between R160 and R200.

Previously announced in February 2022 and actualized in selected Johannesburg stores by March, the new platform Spar2U has grown dramatically. Now in June 2022, plans for expansion to other branches across the country illustrate the upsurge of enthusiasm from Spar’s independent retailers. This momentum resonates with consumers as well, demonstrated by the welcoming reception and preparation for further service rollouts.

With Spar’s annual results pointing to an expanded service at 373 stores and an additional 170 scheduled, the group has shown substantial progress. Furthermore, burgeoning app download numbers reaching over 350,000, with an active user rate of 20-25%, signify that Spar2U is amassing a sizeable user base, ultimately placing Spar at the forefront of rapid delivery service innovation in South Africa, geared towards a sustainable future.
