Continued Search for Missing Joshlin Smith: Polygraph Clears Mother and Boyfriend Amid Investigation

As the search for six-year-old Joshlin Smith enters its tenth day, the Saldanha Bay community in Diazville remains gripped by her mysterious disappearance. Joshlin was last seen near her home at around 5pm on February 19, and despite a massive search effort, she has not yet been found.

Upon Mayor Andre Truter's appeal, the City of Cape Town has sent additional search resources to aid the South African Police Service (SAPS) in their quest to uncover Joshlin's whereabouts. The police faced challenges earlier when false information led them to scale down the operation. However, the new push signifies a redoubled effort to find the six-year-old.

In a noteworthy development, Gayton McKenzie, president of the Patriotic Alliance, has revealed that Joshlin's mother, Kelly, and her boyfriend, Jacquin Appollis, are no longer under suspicion following a polygraph test. "The mom and boyfriend passed the lie detector test," confirmed McKenzie, eliminating them from the center of the investigation.

An independent investigation by McKenzie, which included Facebook live updates, disclosed that three individuals had been with Joshlin during the hour before she vanished, other than the mother and her boyfriend. Intriguingly, the initial statement provided to the police by Kelly presented a different account from the one she told McKenzie, leading to further questions.

One of the individuals, Steven van Rhyn, who spent time with Appollis on the day of Joshlin's disappearance, has been taken in for questioning for the second time. He provided insights into the activities on the day Joshlin went missing, noting that both Kelly and he used narcotics and that a woman directed Joshlin to check on her children, after which both the child and the woman were not seen again.

The investigation's delicate nature means that the police are cautious about releasing too much information to the public. "As it can hamper the ongoing investigation and...poses a potential safety risk to those involved," police spokesperson Malcolm Pojie expressed, reinforcing the difficulties faced in this case.

Despite the breakthrough with the polygraph test, the community and Joshlin's family are desperate for answers. Every moment that passes intensifies the urgency to find Joshlin and reunite her with her family.
