In an unfortunate incident at the North West University's Vanderbijlpark campus, a student behind the wheel tried to evade an escalating student protest when she accidentally collided with two of her peers. On Tuesday, the campus became a scene of turmoil as students clashed with police during a demonstration regarding the release of student allowances. The protest quickly became heated, with some protestors resorting to throwing stones at officers.

Louis Jacobs, the university spokesperson, informed that in the ensuing chaos that unfolded as police reacted to the aggression, the student driver found herself amidst the fracas, inadvertently causing the accident. He assured that the two students who were hit received immediate attention. Although one of the students had to undergo medical examination, they were able to return to their residence later the same day.

The situation has called for the university's involvement in providing care and support not only to the injured students but also to the driver, who is reportedly suffering from trauma following the incident.

Efforts were made to quell the unrest as Vice-chancellor Prof Mzubanzi Bismark Tyobeka stated that meetings were held with various stakeholders to address the disruptions to the academic program. He expressed satisfaction with the progress of these discussions and announced that face-to-face classes would resume shortly, signifying the restoration of normality.

The protests led by the Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command under the leadership of Promise Shabangu vocalized the struggle the students face in acquiring basic necessities due to the delay in the dispensation of their allowances. With the academic calendar already in motion, students are feeling the pinch more than ever. Despite the urgency of their demands, the university remained firm in its position regarding the control—or lack thereof—over the processes governed by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme.

Tyobeka emphasized the university's determination in upholding safety and ensuring that any forms of unrest do not repeat. Law enforcement agencies have been put on alert to address any misconduct sternly.

While the incident has highlighted the tensions surrounding the management of student funds, it has also showcased the perils that students and staff may face during protests that escalate into violence. As the university navigates these complex challenges, the overriding message is clear: student welfare and safety remain a top priority alongside the continuation of academic endeavors.
