Bheki Zondo: From Pointsman to Traffic CEO

Bheki Zondo’s life epitomizes the power of perseverance and education in transforming one's circumstances. His rise from a pointsman controlling the bustling streets of Johannesburg to the CEO of Traffic Free Flow (TFF) is a testimony to the potential that lies in steadfast ambition and hard work.

Born and raised in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal, Zondo moved to Johannesburg in 2005, with aspirations of pursuing a law degree. His first jobs in the city included working as a cleaner and later as a company messenger – roles that, while not glamorous, instilled in him a work ethic that would prove invaluable.

In 2007, Zondo began his journey on the streets as an Outsurance pointsman. The role required him to manage traffic flow at crucial intersections, helping to alleviate congestion and ensuring commuters could navigate the city efficiently. Amidst this demanding schedule, he dedicated himself to academic studies at the University of South Africa (Unisa), often shuttling between his work on the streets and his books at home.

The balance of academia and full-time work was rigorous, particularly for Zondo, who resided in a modest backroom in the Alexandra township. Yet, with remarkable discipline, he managed both his job and his studies, gradually crafting a better future.

Zondo's hard work didn't go unnoticed. Traffic FreeFlow, recognizing his commitment and potential, assisted with his educational expenses. The investment paid off when Zondo, after obtaining his law degree, rose through the ranks from supervisor to a role within the company's human resources department.

Furthering his education in human resources and completing a business course set the stage for his next remarkable leap – becoming the CEO of TFF's Tshwane branch and subsequently a shareholder. His ascendancy didn't stop there; today, Zondo is the proud owner of all three TFF branches located in Johannesburg, Tshwane, and the Cape Winelands.

Emphasizing the importance of continuous learning, Zondo ensures his organization pays forward the same support he received by financing studies for his employees. This initiative has seen pointsmen within the company grow into traffic cops and metro police officers, often obtaining motorbike licenses through the support and training provided by TFF.

Yet, despite the strides that have been made, Zondo still identifies challenges within the sector. He stresses the importance of the public's respect for pointsmen, whose role is critical in maintaining traffic flow and road safety. Moreover, he advocates for caution regarding displaced individuals who inappropriately assume the role of traffic controllers, which often results in manipulated traffic lights and safety issues.

Zondo's determination to expand the reach of TFF is unwavering. With plans to deploy additional pointsmen across Limpopo and Mpumalanga and a desire to increase the current team of 240 pointsmen, his leadership continues to ensure that TFF marks its presence across South Africa, providing a critical service in urban mobility.
