Disgraced Stellenbosch Lawyer Hanro Steffen Struck Off for Misappropriating Millions

In a decisive move to uphold justice and the integrity of the legal profession, the Western Cape High Court has ordered the disbarment of Hanro Erasmus Steffen, a once-trusted attorney based in Stellenbosch and Brackenfell, who was found guilty of misappropriating funds exceeding R7 million from his clients.

The high-profile case, presided over by judges Mark Sher and Judge Patric Gamble, came to a head after the Legal Practice Council (LPC) brought forth damning evidence against Steffen. Born out of greed, Steffen's appalling betrayal saw him dip into the financial reserves of a diverse group of clients, ranging from young couples to retired pensioners, and even trust funds.

Steffen’s fall from grace is a cautionary tale for legal professionals. Initially alerted to his malpractice when allegations surfaced about the misappropriation of R3.9 million from the Fijnbosch Farm Trust Fund in March 2022, the LPC acted by suspending him, only to uncover further thefts amounting to another R3.3 million from eight clients. This all took place in a span of just over two years, from October 2020 to April 2022.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, the court highlighted that Steffen, educated at the esteemed Stellenbosch University with a BCom and LLB degree, had shown no remorse or intention to repay his victims. His actions betrayed the trust clients place in legal practitioners and underscored the necessity of the court’s firm response.

Moreover, Steffen's guile was not limited to acts of simple theft; it was calculated and opportunistic, leveraging his position whenever possible for personal gain. His brazenness extended to the period of his suspension, during which he continued to deceive and steal from those who had entrusted him with their funds.

The court ordered that his practice be put under curatorship. The disgraced attorney was also mandated to surrender his certificate of admission and enrolment to the registrar and to cover the costs of the legal proceedings.
