A Decade of Determination: Groundbreaking Moment as Darling’s First High School Begins Construction

In a joyous victory for the residents of Darling, a small town nestled in South Africa’s biodiverse Cape Floral Region, the long-awaited construction of the first high school is now underway, marking the culmination of nearly a decade of relentless advocacy by the local government and community members.

The Swartland Municipality, embracing the voices and needs of its constituents, spearheaded the campaign for this essential educational institution. The lack of a local high school had been a significant concern, compelling students to undertake daily commutes to neighboring towns such as Atlantis, Malmesbury, and Moorreesburg for secondary education—an obstacle to both efficient learning and family cohesion.

Since the call for a high school was brought forward in the municipality’s 2014/15 Integrated Development Plan, there has been a unified front of residents and officials, particularly underscored by the dedicated efforts of spokesperson Mart-Marie Haasbroek and Executive Mayor Harold Cleophas. Their unwavering dedication bore fruit when the Western Cape Provincial Treasury earmarked R70 million for the endeavor in 2018.

Despite fiscal challenges, including severe budget constraints from the National Government that threatened to derail the project, the Swartland Municipality's resolve did not waver. Tireless negotiations with the Western Cape Department of Education ensured that education remained a priority, leading to the approval of plans in September 2023 and the firm commitment to initiate immediate construction.
