RISE Mzansi Announces Major Funding Boost from Oppenheimer Family

In a bold move for political transparency, the recently formed party RISE Mzansi has publicly announced receiving a substantial financial windfall since its inception last year. Emphasizing their commitment to democratic values, RISE Mzansi declared over R17 million in contributions, with the lion’s share coming from the influential Oppenheimer family, particularly a donation exceeding R15 million from Rebecca Oppenheimer.

This declaration took place on Saturday and complies with the stipulations of the Political Party Funding Act overseen by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). RISE Mzansi's commitment to transparency aligns with the act's aim to promote accountability among political entities.

Makashule Gana, the party’s chief organiser, expressed that this financial support is pivotal for political innovation and encouraging wider participation in the democratic process. Gana stated, "Political change and deepening democratic participation require significant resources." This openness is thought to be a strategically savvy maneuver, aligning with public expectations for more transparent political financing.

RISE Mzansi is joining the ranks of relatively young political parties like ActionSA, which have also benefitted from the generosity of the Oppenheimer family. The family, known for their extensive political associations, has previously contributed nearly R10 million to ActionSA. These transactions underscore the continuing impact that the Oppenheimer legacy has on South Africa's political landscape.

In a stark contrast to established parties that enjoy taxpayer-funded support, Gana highlighted that new contenders like RISE Mzansi depend on private individuals for financial sustainability. He underlined, “It is private citizens who are committed to democracy that enable us to do the work we do.” This statement reinforces the sentiment that grassroots financial backing is crucial for emerging political movements.

Although receiving funds from such a notable patron as the Oppenheimer family has raised eyebrows, RISE Mzansi establishes firm boundaries regarding their funding sources. Gana reassured the public that the party adheres to strict funding criteria, turning away monies from foreign governments, entities suspected of offering proceeds from crime, or donors seeking undue influence.

In alignment with their vision, all donations to RISE Mzansi are said to be from supporters who share their aspirations for "a safe, prosperous, equal and united country where people live in happiness and dignity in one generation." The party has also received a substantial R1 million from Main Street 1564 (Pty) Ltd, further bolstering their financial position, as well as non-monetary support from entities like Kairos Communications (Pty) Ltd and InJozi Design Cc, illustrating a multi-faceted approach to their resource development plan.
