Pietermaritzburg Entrepreneurs Launch Aviation Academy to Foster Future Pilots

In the heart of KwaZulu-Natal, two high school students' dreams have been granted wings, as entrepreneurs Ken and Monica Phillips launched the Lincoln Aviation Academy over the weekend. This Pietermaritzburg-based couple, driven by their undying love for the skies, have crafted an initiative that stands not only as a symbol of their lifelong dream but as a beacon of hope for future pilots from varying walks of life.

With an aim to dismantle barriers and democratize access to aviation industry careers, Lincoln Aviation is more than just a school for learning how to pilot aircraft; it's a launchpad for nurturing passion and potential. The academy's novel approach offers hands-on experience to secondary school students, thrusting them into the cockpit to explore this high-flying field from the vantage point of the pilot's seat.

Ken, a commercial pilot by training who has made a mark as a land surveyor, and Monica, co-owners of Lincoln Cottages, recognize that the love for flight should not be curtailed by one's financial standing. This saw them training two pupils, 17-year-olds Ndumiso Mthiyane and Sindiswa Mnikathi, from Pietermaritzburg College and Siyazama Senior Secondary School respectively, under the Lincoln Aviator introduction program, pro bono.

Typically, the initiation program is priced at R9,000, encompassing two days filled with aviation-related activities and a three-night stay. However, this price tag is not meant to exclude; the duo is devoted to ensuring top-performing students, especially from less affluent institutions, are given opportunities in this costly field.

Local leaders like Umgungundlovu district mayor Mzi Zuma are getting involved too, showing his support by funding Sindiswa Mnikathi’s training fees. Their backgrounds notwithstanding, the program seeks to afford these pupils a rare glimpse into the realities of the aviation industry and put them to the test, determining their aptitude and resilience in the face of this demanding profession.

For Mnikathi, a vision that seemed out of reach is now palpable, while Mthiyane's ambition to become a professional pilot seems closer to attainment as he eyes a private pilot license (PPL). They represent a new wave of young individuals for whom the sky is not a limit but a playground.

Ken Phillips envisions Lincoln Aviation stretching its wings beyond Pietermaritzburg, transforming school excursions across the province into an immersive learning experience that could help chart the course for many more youth in the region.

This venture is trailblazing a path not previously trodden in South African education, embedding the seeds of aviation dreams directly into the learning environment and potentially altering the landscape of opportunities for students who once saw such careers as mere fantasies.
