Integrating Satellite Data and Local Insights for Sustainable Management of South Africa’s Communal Lands

In the fertile yet fragile landscapes of the Eastern Cape, South Africa, a groundbreaking study has shed light on the crucial issue of land degradation affecting the livelihoods of millions living on communal land. The Tyhume Valley, with its 20 villages nestled amidst the Amathole Mountains, serves as a microcosm for the challenges and potential remedies for communal land management nationwide.


Lured by the prospect of untangling complex environmental narratives, a team of geoinformation scientists from the Agricultural Research Council and the University of the Free State embarked on an unprecedented endeavor, harmonizing three decades of satellite data with the lived experiences of the valley’s inhabitants.


The team’s thorough analysis revealed significant shifts in land use patterns from 1989 to 2019: notably, the proliferation of the indigenous sweet thorn tree by 25%, a modest expansion of residential areas by 2.5%, and a worrisome decline in grazing and cropland by 18% and 9.6% respectively, accompanied by a 1.1% reduction in dam coverage.


Gathering insights from 102 seasoned residents, the study unveiled that the sweet thorn's spread was driven by reduced fuelwood harvesting, as modernization propelled locals towards electricity use, and the consequent abandonment of cropland, offering fertile ground for the tree's establishment. Although its value as fodder and fuel was recognized, concerns rose over its encroachment on arable land and the dwindling of biodiverse flora, including plants of medicinal and cultural import.


Compounding these shifts were the tales of dwindling grazing spaces, cropland, and water resources attributed to mismanagement, inadequate agricultural support, and erratic rainfall. The demographic surge, leading to the construction of abodes on pastures, strained the already overtaxed water resources, exacerbating the plight of livestock farmers who faced additional costs for fodder or extended treks for grazing.


The revered communal dams, once a backbone for agriculture in each village, now lay desiccated. Despite a 14-year episode of scanty rainfall, the community pinned the blame on negligent maintenance and a forsaking of time-honored water conservation practices.


Addressing the community's yearn for bygone days when fenced areas and permit systems oversaw judicious land usage, the researchers charted a course for improved land stewardship. They advocated for the intervention of village committees, tribal authorities, and extension services, all operating within the ambit of spatial planning and land use specifications.


Controlling the sweet thorn by bolstering stocks of browsing livestock, restoring traditional water harvesting, and dredging projects akin to other successful endeavors in the Eastern Cape were signposted as constructive measures.


Synthesizing technological prowess with community wisdom, the study stands as a testament to the immense value that such a dual approach holds for the revitalization of communal lands—an approach that, if wholeheartedly embraced, could restore the provision of vital ecosystem services upon which these communities deeply depend.
