Fashion Designer Thula Sindi Denies Wrongdoing Amid SIU Poultry Farm Grant Probe

South African fashion designer Thula Sindi has become ensnared in a controversy involving the alleged misappropriation of a R5 million grant intended for a poultry farm by the National Lotteries Commission (NLC). The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has implicated Sindi in a financial investigation that also involves actress Moitheri "Terry" Pheto and her sister Dimakatso. The funds, purportedly for a venture that was to benefit Dimakatso, were partially deposited into Sindi's company, Black Planet Trading, which received R140,000, while Moitheri’s entities and personal account received R3.2 million.

Thula Sindi, a respected name in the South African fashion scene, has vehemently denied any illicit involvement, claiming he merely provided legitimate consulting services. According to Sindi, his role was advisory in nature, focusing on project methodology—but which didn’t encompass financial control or budget oversight for the establishment of the poultry farm.

Despite the serious nature of the allegations, Sindi maintains his innocence, articulating he had no part in the application for the grants made by a company named Zibsibix and had only been engaged to consult on the project for a period of 12 months. He asseverates that the amount he charged was a nominal fee covering his travel, printing, telecommunication, and research costs.

Facing the media, Sindi shared grievances about the manner in which the SIU carried out its investigation, stating he found their approach contemptuous and unprofessional. He recounted specific incidents where SIU investigators treated him with disdain, including a phone call fraught with insults and accusations of non-cooperation.

Sindi further highlighted his impeccable career, spanning nearly two decades in entrepreneurship within the sectors of clothing manufacturing, retail, and business consultancy. He emphasized his reputation for ethical conduct and aversion to corruption. The fashion designer expressed dismay at being unwittingly dragged into a scandal, one he describes as a misrepresentation of facts intended to besmirch his reputation.

The publicized dispute has put the SIU’s investigative methods under scrutiny. The Unit insists that Sindi was uncooperative and evasive even as Sindi requests clarity on the investigation's terms of reference, his specific implications, and an option for written communication. The SIU remains resolute that an in-person interview is requisite, an insistence that has fueled the current impasse.

SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago has dismissed Sindi’s allegations as baseless, upholding that all protocol has been duly followed and the investigation is proceeding accordingly.
