Cape Town Embraces Artistic Flair with Bollard Beautification Initiative

Cape Town's Central Business District (CBD) has become an animated enclave where art meets history, thanks to a novel urban beautification initiative. The streets, once lined with nondescript, sturdy bollards are now a riot of colors, depicting the rich tapestry of the city's heritage, culture, and iconic landmarks.

The Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID), tasked with the management and promotion of the CBD, has spearheaded the 'A Fusion of Iconic Cape Town Locations and African Unity Project.' It's a venture that converges urban improvement with an affirmation of Africa’s cultural depth — a mission aggregated from the work of four exceptional artists from the vivacious HandCantrol 360 Crew.

Launching in January 2024, the project involved a meticulous operation to prepare the bollards using three-in-one paint, ensuring the durability of the art against the elements. CCID Urban Management managed the initiative, aiming to celebrate the Mother City's renowned landmarks, from the district of Six to the sunbathed foothills of Table Mountain, and the whimsical Boulders Beach.

Kally Benito, the manager at CCID Urban Management, explained the project's vision. "Every bollard becomes a storyteller, a chronicler of Cape Town's diverse history," said Benito. Not just a beautification tactic, the bollard art project is a social instrument designed to amplify African unity through the universal language of design, revealing the city's soul in an explosion of color and form.

Among the artists, Jason Redman, known in the graffiti world as Dfeat Once, brings over two decades of street art experience to the table, commenting on the challenge and charm of the unique canvas, "The roundness of the surfaces adds a layer of complexity, ensuring the art is coherent from every perspective." His expertise with mixed media comes into play as they employ paint markers, tested for their endurance on metal surfaces.

This outdoor gallery injects a new dynamic into the city's streetscape and has ignited discussions on the role of public art in communal and urban spaces—not just as an ornamental layer but as a testament to collective memory and identity.

Maxwell Southgate, recognized on walls across the world as Mak1one, is another member of the illustrious crew. Southgate revisited his high-profile mural at Charly's Bakery, originally painted 14 years ago, asserting long-term commitment to the city's evolving art scene.

The CCID’s Urban Management department eyes the extension of this colorful crusade beyond St Georges Mall, envisioning more districts of the CBD imbued with the art project's narrative magnetism.

This art project is not merely about aesthetic enhancement. It's about reclaiming the streets for the people, making them places of congregation and interaction, where each painted bollard becomes a landmark in itself, a celebration of Cape Town's identity and a catalyst for unity.
