South African Young Scientists Triumph at Taiwan International Science Fair

South African budding scientific talent made a significant mark on the global stage at the 2024 Taiwan International Science Fair, with two promising young researchers receiving prestigious international accolades for their innovative projects. Johannes Jacobus Deysel and Lethabo Molobi, representing South Africa's future generation of scientists, have returned home with awards recognizing their exceptional research abilities and contributions to the advancement of science and technology.

The Taiwan International Science Fair, a renowned global event that was held from January 27 to February 2, 2024, at the National Taiwan Science Education Centre in Taipei, gathered some of the most brilliant young minds from around the world. A total of 630 participants from 27 countries came together, each sharing their unique research and engaging in a diverse cultural exchange.

Johannes Jacobus Deysel, a dedicated grade 11 student from Hoërskool Jim Fouché in Bloemfontein, secured the Third Award in the intensely competitive computer science and information engineering category. His research titled “Breaking a Caesar cipher/Vigenère cipher encryption for secure data communication” offered a poignant exploration into the vulnerabilities of ciphers, shedding light on the elements that impact the robustness of encryption systems—a topic highly relevant in our increasingly digital world.

Meanwhile, Lethabo Molobi—a grade 12 learner from Zinniaville Secondary School in the North West’s Bojanala region—demonstrated her intellectual prowess, earning the Fourth Award and the Viewer’s Choice Award in the behavioral and social sciences category. Her fascinating project, “From Human Intelligence to Artificial Intelligence Chatbots: Modern Day Writing,” ventured into the realm of AI, specifically focusing on the distinction between AI-generated text and human-written content in educational environments.

Each of these young scientists not only displayed a profound understanding of their respective fields but also showcased an ability to conduct research that resonates on an international scale. Their accomplishments have been celebrated by various stakeholders, including Eskom, which supports the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists—a local platform that encourages the participation of young South Africans in science and technology.

Acting CEO of the Eskom Development Foundation, Mologadi Motshele, expressed immense pride in Deysel and Molobi's achievements, emphasizing that their success among a highly skilled and diverse group of young scientists represents a remarkable achievement. Parthy Chetty, Eskom Expo executive director, highlighted the holistic nature of these international competitions, noting that beyond the academics, participants gain exposure to different cultures and forge enduring international friendships.

The victories of Deysel and Molobi have not only brought personal joy and satisfaction to the young scientists but have also shined a spotlight on South Africa's potential in fostering scientific excellence.
