Celebrations Begin as Western Cape Announces Record High Matric Pass Rate

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has much to celebrate as it announces a significant accomplishment for the #ClassOf2023. The matriculants of the Western Cape have overcome a year of significant challenges to achieve an impressive 81.54% pass rate—an indicator of hard work, perseverance, and the strength of the province's education system.

Over 50,000 candidates passed their National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations, a testament to their dedication and the support afforded by the education stakeholders in the region. Notably, 26,182 students, amounting to 42.2% of this cohort, have qualified with a bachelor's pass. This benchmark allows them to knock on the doors of higher education institutions and is a critical indicator of the quality and depth of the passes attained.

David Maynier, the Western Cape Minister for Basic Education, lauded these results, especially the performance in critical subjects. A mathematics pass rate of 75.4% and a physical sciences pass rate of 82.2% not only topped the charts nationally but also underlined the sectors of potential growth for both provincial and national economies. These figures reflect a concerted effort to elevate performance in subjects that are crucial for future innovation and economic development.

Despite an exceptionally tough year punctuated by floods, transport strikes, and the ever-troubling load shedding, the students showed remarkable resilience. Candidly acknowledging these disruptions, Maynier pointed to the incredible nature of these achievements against the odds. His commendations extended to the improved retention rate, noting a promising figure of 69.3% for learners continuing from Grade 10 to 12. This measure echoes the WCED's long-term educational objectives—keeping learners in school and steering them toward success.

Adding to the province's accolades, six learners were distinguished at the national level, including top achievers across the country and an exemplary candidate with special needs who showcased exceptional academic prowess.
