Taxi Violence Escalates in Nyanga with Double Murder Following Taxi Association Meeting

The streets of Nyanga in Cape Town were tainted with violence once again when two taxi drivers associated with the Cape Organisation for Taxi Association (CATA) were callously shot and killed on the afternoon of Wednesday, 17 January. This deadly incident unfolded near the Holy Cross Anglican Church on Fenyano Street shortly after these drivers attended a meeting hosted by CATA.

Despite the busy surroundings and the usual flow of community life, on this bleak day, the usual hum was shattered by the sound of gunshots that continued for an alarming five minutes, causing panic and fear amongst the residents. An eyewitness, whose identity remains undisclosed for safety reasons, vividly recalled the terror that unfolded. As the gunshots ceased, a grim discovery awaited: two individuals lay bleeding, their lives slipping away amidst the chaos, within the very cars they used to navigate the often-perilous roads of the local taxi industry.

CATA, an influential player in the Western Cape's taxi scene, acknowledged through their spokesperson Nkululekho Sityebi, not only the loss of their members but the stark brutality that now shadows their gathering. Sityebi expressed dismay and confirmed the targeted attack on their members as they departed from the congregation, an assault carried out by assailants whose identities remain unknown.
