Tshwane Metro Police Department Calls Hammanskraal Incident a 'Freak Accident'

The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) has been thrust into the spotlight following a 'freak accident' in Hammanskraal that led to a suspect being hit by one of its official vehicles. The incident, which occurred on Friday, 12 January 2024, also resulted in injuries to two TMPD officers. A footage of the event emerged on social media, raising serious concerns about the conduct of the involved officers.

TMPD spokesperson Isaac Mahamba detailed the events of the incident, explaining that after the suspect allegedly failed to heed the officers' instructions and interfered with their duties, the subsequent collision happened. The suspect, along with two TMPD officials, was promptly taken to a hospital for medical treatment and discharged on the same day.

The suspect was later detained at Temba police station for charges that include failure to comply with a traffic officer's instructions, interference with an officer’s duties, crimen injuria, and resisting arrest. Additionally, the driver and another passenger of the vehicle the suspect had been in were detained, facing similar charges.

The social media recording, which gained widespread attention, shows three TMPD officers seemingly assisting the man to stand before he was hit by the approaching police vehicle. After the collision, the video depicts one officer attempting to seize the recording device from a bystander who was filming the incident.

This alarming footage prompted a swift response from the TMPD and the launch of preliminary investigations. Mahamba confirmed that the officers in the video are indeed members of TMPD and stated that an internal investigation is already in progress. As per protocol, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been notified so they can conduct an independent inquiry into the circumstances of the incident.

TMPD's cooperation with IPID's investigation comes with a call to action for the public. The department is asking anyone with additional information or video evidence related to the controversial incident to step forward and help in piecing together the events that led to the accidental collision and subsequent accusations of misconduct.
