Manhunt Escalates for Killer of Mpumalanga Police Captain

In a tragic incident leaving the community of Mpumalanga in profound shock, a South African Police Service (SAPS) captain was brutally shot and killed. The Hawks, South Africa's Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, have intensified their search efforts to bring the suspect to justice.

The incident occurred last Saturday night at approximately 10 pm, at a car wash in the busy township of KaNyamazane, near Nelspruit. Captain Sibusiso Bethwell Mthombothi, aged 44, was embroiled in an argument with another man, following a minor vehicle collision, which led to the fatal altercation.

According to the Mpumalanga Hawks’ spokesperson, Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi, Mthombothi's car was inadvertently bumped while queued for a wash. This minor accident set off a series of events that ended tragically. A crime intelligence police sergeant attempted to mediate the situation, and an agreement for damage compensation was reached. However, the situation deteriorated rapidly after the sergeant temporarily left the scene.

Eyewitnesses reported that upon returning, the sergeant found Mthombothi had been shot. It is alleged that during a renewed confrontation, the suspect drew his firearm and shot the off-duty officer. In the ensued exchange of gunfire while trying to apprehend the assailant, the suspect managed to escape on foot.

Immediately after the grotesque incident, an investigative team, including the Hawks' serious organised crime unit and the local crime intelligence, began a preliminary investigation. The team is working in collaboration with the Mpumalanga provincial organised crime division and the local criminal record centre to unearth the full circumstances surrounding Captain Mthombothi's death.

The Hawks have publicly requested any individual with useful information to contact their nearest police station. Specifically, they have urged Sibusiso Maseko from Mariti — whom they believe can provide valuable insight — to come forward and assist in resolving the case.
