Residents in Sea Point, a posh neighborhood along Cape Town's Atlantic Seaboard, are being cautioned to remain vigilant after a spree of burglaries has left many without their prized possessions. A crafty pensioner has been identified as the chief suspect in a series of thefts amounting to over R1.2 million in stolen jewellery, with locals and authorities scrambling to address the alarming trend of crime in this typically serene area.

The suspect, whose identity has been captured on social media in hopes of a speedy apprehension, targets affluent homes by utilizing a chillingly simple yet effective method. Pronounced as a man in his 60s, his approach involves ringing multiple doorbells to determine who is absent and then following residents into complexes at opportune moments.

This strategy proved lucrative on December 30th when the alleged thief infiltrated the Oliver Court residential complex and subsequently burglarized two flats, absconding with expensive items, as one deeply concerned resident reports.

The modus operandi that has heightened the anxiety within Sea Point involves the thief tracking which residents are not home. He tailgates unsuspecting individuals entering the complex, making mental notes of unoccupied units, and then striking with precision.

Sea Point Police spokesperson Nowonga Sukwana acknowledges the severity and cunning nature of these crimes, disclosing that two cases have been reported where significant amounts of jewellery were taken, totalling an estimated R800,000 and R465,000, respectively. Despite ongoing investigations, the adept burglar remains at large.

Jacques Weber, a figure of authority within the community, shares harrowing similarities between these recent occurrences and past incidents, which involved a suspect asserting ties to the City of Cape Town to gain entry into residences.
