In the usually calm suburb of Thornton, a harrowing incident involving an e-hailing driver has sent shockwaves through the community and raised concerns over safety for those working in the e-hailing industry.

On the evening of January 3rd, what began as a typical pickup near the Thornton railway station quickly descended into a nightmare, as unidentified assailants abducted an e-hailing driver. The suspects stabbed the driver, forcefully confined him within the boot of his car, and made their escape, leaving bystanders in shock and confusion.

The victim’s ordeal, however, was far from over. Despite his injuries and the traumatic experience of being locked in the trunk of his vehicle, the driver's resolve and ingenuity led to a remarkable escape. As the hijackers drove down Sipres Avenue, the incapacitated vehicle, equipped with a tracking device the kidnappers failed to deactivate, automatically immobilized by the traffic lights on Viking Way. This fortuitous intervention allowed the driver to free himself.

With the little strength he had left, the driver made his way to a nearby BP service station, where he ultimately collapsed, drawing the attention of the community and authorities. A witness at the scene recounted the driver’s brave act and his worrying state upon reaching the service station, leaving many in the community questioning his fate.

The incident prompted immediate action by law enforcement. Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi confirmed the opening of an investigation, with Pinelands detectives registering cases of kidnapping and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm. While the driver was transported to a hospital for medical care, the suspects remain at large.

Ward councillor Riad Davids' comments underscored the rarity of such violent crimes in the area, known for its low crime statistics. However, he took the occasion to encourage locals to remain vigilant, noting that e-hailing drivers have increasingly become targets for criminals.

Community safety initiatives are underway, including the proposed installation of additional cameras and patrolling efforts by the neighbourhood watch and Community Policing Forum (CPF). Residents and those in the e-hailing sector are advised to exercise caution, especially during periods when streets are unusually quiet.

The authorities have issued a plea to the public, requesting anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111. The collective effort of law enforcement and public cooperation will be crucial in apprehending the perpetrators and restoring the sense of security in the community.
