Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, a cherished natural heritage site of Cape Town and a crown jewel in South Africa's botanical kingdom, has recently faced allegations of neglect from a local resident. However, these claims have been robustly challenged by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (Sanbi), which manages the garden.

Colin Bosman, a Newlands resident, expressed his disappointment following a visit to the gardens. His grievances centered around sights of dried-out plant beds, strewn cigarette butts and plastic bottles, alongside unkempt lawns. Such observations starkly contrasted with Bosman's expectations of the international tourist haven, leading him to voice concerns of the garden's current state amidst ongoing political discussions.

Countering these allegations, Nontsikelelo Mpulo, Sanbi's spokesperson, confidently stands by the garden's exemplary standard. Mpulo articulates bewilderment at the complaints, stating ongoing diligent maintenance by the gardens' workforce. She highlights the natural, untouched areas of the garden purposed for conservation, which may be misconstrued as neglect. Mpulo further points out that recent concerts held at the gardens were met with no such negative feedback, illustrating a broader satisfaction amongst visitors.

In addition, disputes have arisen surrounding the termination of the longstanding benefit of free access for Botanical Society of SA (BotSoc) members, a change driven by the pandemic-induced financial constraints and Sanbi's plans for a new loyalty program. Antonia de Barros, BotSoc's general manager, registers the society's disappointment, foreseeing a possible decline in renewals if access to the gardens was the sole membership draw. Despite this setback, both BotSoc and Sanbi continue their collaboration in conservation awareness and programs.

While Bosman's singular critical account has made headlines, numerous social media posts and visitor experiences attest to the beauty and upkeep of Kirstenbosch, aligning with Mpulo's and De Barros' assurances. These testimonies are bolstered by the recent recognition of Kirstenbosch as the best botanical garden in Africa by the World Luxury Travel Awards, an accolade signaling the gardens' international esteem.

In light of the conflicting accounts, visitors to Kirstenbosch are encouraged to share their experiences, both commendatory and critical, ensuring any issues are promptly addressed and the garden's legacy of beauty and biodiversity is upheld.
